Project Profile: CHESS - Red Deer, Alberta
To reduce purchased energy costs, renewable energy sources are used. Optimum
solar exposure provides passive solar heating to the home. Large windows on
the south side of the home and large areas of thermal mass will store
passive solar heat during the day and release it back into the space at
night. Solar thermal panels will provide heat for domestic hot water as well
as space heating. Used in combination with a ground source heat pump and a
hydronic radiant floor the system is designed to distribute heat evenly and
maximize thermal comfort. The electrical needs for the home will be supplied
through a photovoltaic array consisting of 22 - 175 watt panels which will
be grid-tied to the City of Red Deer electrical grid for back-up.
